Your language skills will progress quickly with the courses, and will be strengthened by everyday practice.

visa to study

Generally those who wish to travel to the United States to study must obtain an F-1, M-1 or J-1 visa.

F Visas - Academic Studies:

For people who have been accepted into the program of study or conduct research at a school or university located in the United States.

This is the most common type of student visa and is used for people who want to take an academic course. The university or college usually issues an I-20 form through the SEVIS system, which allows the applicant to apply for their student visa at the US Embassy in their home country.

The applicant must also prove that he/she has sufficient funds to pay for the course and his/her life while studying.

M Visas - Vocational or Non-Academic Studies:

For people who have been accepted into a program of study or training at a non-academic institution in the United States. A classic example of an M-1 visa is students who attend an aeronautics school.

J Visas - Academic Studies as Visitor Exchange:

For individuals who have been accepted into a program through the support of an organization designated to participate in a visitor exchange program in the United States.

The “J” visa is for educational and cultural exchange programs.

Note that J-1 are the ones commonly used by interns and trainees.

Visa B:

Additionally, if you do not qualify for any of the above visas, you may also be able to use the B2 visa to study in the United States for a limited period of time and under limited circumstances.

What is SEVIS and SEVP? What should I know about this?

The Student and Visitor Exchange (SEVP) program is designed to help the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State better control school and exchange programs and category F, M, and J visitors. Visitor and student exchange is maintained in the Visitor and Student Exchange Information System (SEVIS). SEVIS is an internet-based system that maintains efficient and up-to-date information on non-immigrant students (F and M visas), exchange visitors (J visa) and their dependents (F-2, M-2 and J-2). SEVIS allows schools and support programs to transmit important information and event notifications on the Internet to the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State (DOS) throughout a student's stay or exchange in the United States.

All students must hold a SEVIS-generated I-20 issued by a DHS-approved educational institution, which they submit when applying for their student visa.
